Husqvarna Logo Remade

I remade the Husqvarna logo trying to make it look a bit more modern but keeping the same sort of look.

Ethical and legal work practices associated with design

As a designer there are some legal issues that may occur if you do not follow some Ethical and Legal work practices in your work.  One of the biggest ones is copyright and plagiarism or using work that is not your own. You have to be careful especially with images and photographs.  You must get permission or buy stock before being able to use other peoples work or images or you can get into a lot of trouble with copyright issues.  There are other rules you should also follow like showing admiration to other designers in fair and open competition and avoiding conflict of interest etc. but copyright is probably the most important issue.

Pop Art Movement and Graphic Design

The pop art movement came around in the late 1950’s and 60s and was one of the biggest art movements in the 20th Century. Pop art refers to popular culture of that era which was things like: packaging, advertisements, television, comic books and basically any sort of everyday objects which were turned into art works.  Pop artists liked to use commercial methods of production so there artworks could be reproduced, which was a large part of the movement and can also relate to Graphic Design. Some of the most notable and famous artists of this Movement are Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

The pop art style quite basic and uses bright psychedelic colours, most probably influenced from the ‘retro’ ‘hippie’ style of the 60’s and also uses a lot of black for the outlines and to make the artworks stand out.  The images are very flat looking and the shading is only made up of black and white.  Roy Lichtenstein also used halftone patterns to make up the skin for a lot of his artworks which represented the comic book style.
A lot of Pop Art also used a ‘stencil street art look’ which is still quite common in today’s culture

Pop Art and Graphic Design
I think that the pop art movement had, and still is a large influence in Graphic Design, particularly in poster art. Because pop art is so bright and draws attention so well it matches the criteria of poster art perfectly.  Many aspects of pop art is used in modern day poster art, particularly in political posters.

But it is not just poster art where pop art is still used. It is used in almost every area of design, print design, to create colorful birthday cards, t-shirt designs, badges, calendars, album art, canvas, web design advertising etc.
In my opinion pop art and graphic design are quite similar and only a fine line separates them. Pop art is just art that looks like it has been made by a machine and Graphic Design is conveying a message through visual application but the principles of both are very similar, they stand out, are very bold and can be used commercially for reproduction. I think pop art is the closest art style to graphic design and of all the art movements is still used the most in design today and will be for

What does a Graphic Designer Do?

Explain in detail exactly what a Graphic Designer is
responsible for within an organization?

A Graphic Designer uses the creative processes and skills to convey a message or purpose through visual application using type, images and knowledge.  There are many different types of organizations where graphic designers can work. A few of them  are “in-house” designers where they will work for a particular business or company, who hire the designers to create all of their visual and graphical content like brochure’s, posters, web sites, packaging etc. There are usually only one or just a few designers depending on the company.  There are also graphic designers that work for graphic design firms who do basically the same thing but for more clients and companies. These usually have a team of designers and also have art directors, printing experts, writers, photographers etc. who you work closely with.  There are also freelance graphic designers who own their own business and can work from home or their own office. These designers can choose their own clients and generally, but not always, focus on a particular type of graphic design like album artwork or logo design etc.

A Job Description that fits a Graphic Designer
“A person who specializes in visual communication through a skilful combination of text and pictures in advertisements, magazines, books, etc. for print, the web and other media.” (http://richmediadp.wordpress.com/2011/09/08/what-does-a-graphic-designer-do/)

... One that doesn’t
“A Graphic designer does billboards, posters magazine ads, business cards, company logos, often web designs, images, layouts, and virtually anything else you would do in Adobe Illustrator” (http://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100219145429AArXbte)

Logo Designs that I don't like

Logos that I don’t like
Two famous logos that I don’t particularly like are the Husqvarna logo and the Australian beer Fosters logo.

The reason that I don’t really like these logos is just because both of them are quite boring and plain, particularly the Foster’s logo which also looks quite old and out-dated. The Fosters logo looks like it was made quite a while ago and has not been updated since. Although most beer logos are quite old looking and have a similar style to this one, this logo stands out as being one of the worst in my opinion.
